Updated: Nov 11, 2023

Hello there, fellow outdoor enthusiasts! If you're as passionate about camping and cooking as we are, you're in for a treat today. We're about to delve into the world of campfire cooking and explore the uses and importance of a campfire cooking tripod.

Unleashing Your Inner Chef in the Wild

Picture this: you're surrounded by the serene beauty of nature, a warm campfire crackling in front of you, and the tantalizing aroma of your dinner sizzling in the air. What's the secret to turning this campfire scene into a culinary adventure? It's the trusty campfire cooking tripod!

What's a Campfire Cooking Tripod?

First things first, let's get acquainted with this invaluable piece of campfire equipment. A campfire cooking tripod is essentially a three-legged stand made of sturdy metal. It's designed to hold various cookware like pots, pans, and Dutch ovens over an open flame. The three legs provide stability on uneven ground, allowing you to adjust the cooking height and position with ease.

Why It's Your New Best Friend in the Wild

Here are a few reasons why a campfire cooking tripod should be a staple in your camping gear:

1. Versatility: Whether you're whipping up a hearty stew, frying fresh-caught fish, or simply brewing a pot of coffee, the tripod has you covered. You can adjust the height and distance from the fire to control the heat, making it adaptable for a range of recipes.

2. No Need for a Grate: Forget the traditional campfire grate. With a tripod, you can suspend your cookware directly over the flames. This means you can use it with almost any kind of pot or pan, as well as cast iron Dutch ovens, which are campfire cooking legends.

3. Easy to Transport: Most tripods are designed to be collapsible, making them easy to carry in your camping gear. They're relatively lightweight, which is essential for backpackers and campers who need to minimize their load.

4. Connect with Nature: Cooking with a campfire cooking tripod connects you with the primal joy of preparing meals in the great outdoors. The gentle crackling of the fire, the scent of the wood smoke, and the knowledge that you're self-sufficient in nature all add to the experience.

Campfire Cooking Tips

Now that you're excited about your campfire cooking tripod, here are a few tips to get the most out of it:

1. Secure Placement: Make sure to place your tripod on stable ground, and check that it's firmly anchored before suspending your cookware.

2. Adjust Height: Experiment with different heights to control the intensity of the heat. Lower your cookware for a rolling boil or raise it for a gentle simmer.

3. Safety First: Always be cautious around the campfire, and have safety equipment like a bucket of water or sand nearby.

So now you know about the importance of a campfire cooking tripod, it is time for us to review one!

Camping Scamping HQ Review

We invested in the affordable Yueranhu Camping Tripod. Coming in at a reasonable £18.60, we were impressed at how well it withstood 5 hours of intense, hard work with our weighty Dutch oven (reviewed here) when cooking our Hawaiian Slow Cooked Kalua Pork. Made from lightweight aluminium, we feared that it would buckle under the weight, but it stood firm and appeared largely unchanged at the end of our cooking marathon - just a little discolouration at the feet end of the poles.

You can chose whether to set up with 6 or 9 parts, although not sure what you would cook with just two sections to each pole as it would not stand very tall. With three sections to each post, the tripod stands at approximately 78cm above the floor. The height of the chain is adjustable and there was plenty of room for our 5.7 litre Dutch oven to hand freely over the flames of our campfire.

The pole sections easily threaded together and undid easily when we had finished cooking. The tripod packs down into a handy carrying bag and weighs in at just under 1lb which is pretty impressive given the tripod can handle up to 10kg in weight when cooking.

All in all we were very impressed with the quality of this tripod and its portability.

In conclusion, a campfire cooking tripod is more than just a practical piece of gear; it's your gateway to becoming an outdoor chef extraordinaire. It enables you to create delicious meals, connect with nature, and relish the joys of campfire cooking. So, gear up, gather around the campfire, and let your culinary adventures in the wild begin! Happy cooking, campfire chefs!
