Bodiam Castle, East Sussex

Off to medieval resplendence today! We have been a few times over the years and today did not disappoint.

We love walking over the moat bridge to approach the portcullis of the 14th century and the rounded turrets. Whilst the exterior is still intact, inside is largely ruin. There are hints of its previous life and inhabitants. If you close your eyes you can just imagine the bustling kitchen, roaring roasting hearth, huge tables in the Great Hall. What secrets must these walls protect?

Lovely gardens around the castle too, including a nationally significant bat maternity roost and a pillbox from the Second World War, which was part of a line of defences along the River Rother aimed at slowing down any advance from the South.

But the doors! Oh my, the doors (we at Camping Scamping HQ "may" have a "tiny" obsession with doors). Just can't get enough of the doors. Who went through them? What is on the other side?

Part of the National Trust, so free entry and parking for members. Non-members: £11 Adult, £5.50 Child, £27.50 Family
